"Letters Home" - production

FILM TWO for Comma Film is a wrap now! 4 production days in Leeds have finished and was a very intense. We had a fantastic experience with the crew and Comma Film once again. “Letters Home” is an interesting script and by the looks of the photography I am expecting it to make a pretty good film. Our job is to make it better with a good sound design.
The production was scheduled to last 3 days spanning over Thursday to Sunday with one day off somewhere in between. We met up at FutureWorks for 11.30am on the Thursday to be ferried over to Leeds with all the gear. As most of the script takes place at night, we started shooting on the Thursday evening at 9pm and finished that first day at about 6am, with a slight delay of 2 hrs compared to the call sheet. It was a productive night and we did ours to get a good production sound. The area we shot in lies in the flight path of Leeds Airport and has busy city traffic outside the paper thin walls and on top of that, the many take away’s underneath the flat we are shooting in, have their fans running to 3-4am at night. So plenty of challenges for us sound guys.

We ended up working all the way through the weekend – all four days – and long hours too due to some unforeseen events. It just goes to show that you can plan and expect many things, but how do you plan for the unexpected? Like a generator exploding your light in front of Leeds Stadium very late at night with no one to turn to? Luckily a neighbour turned up who happened to be in the same business and knew far too well that help can be God sent. By letting us use power from his house, we got the lights up and running again and thanks to him we got that scene without too much delay.

Dave and I still have some voice-overs to do with the main character played by Nasser Memarzia, which are vital to the story telling. Nasser Memarzia has previously starred in The Kite Runner (2007), Munich (2005), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), to mention a few and it was a pleasure to see him work on set. He is a very compassionate man and very easy to work with. Danny and Nasser seemed to enjoy acting together and put a lot of energy into the scenes without doing much. It was very interesting to see two pros in action up close at mic range, which is where we like being!

As I mentioned in my post about Witness Protection, the films have good story lines and will be interesting to watch for a wide audience. They will feature at VERSION FESTIVAL at the Corner House early in November. I am looking forward to see the end result.
